We rewrote the Android app for 7.0, with a new design and its own camera. Big accounts reconnect in 1.1 seconds.

We rewrote Trillian for Android from the ground up, and Trillian 7.0 is the result. The design, the camera, the photo viewer, voice clips, notifications, and sign-in are all new. It's quicker too: on an account with 65,000 contacts and 450,000 group members, reconnecting now takes 1.1 seconds instead of 6.8. Here's a look at what changed.

Material 3, top to bottom

Settings as cards
Settings as cards

Trillian now follows Google's Material 3 design, and every color in the app is worked out from the one accent color you pick. Settings are laid out as rounded cards with their icons in circles, and the bottom bar marks the tab you're on with a pill.

Menus from the bottom
Reconnecting, quietly

Menus slide up from the bottom of the screen, and a couple of things got new names and places. The "RECENT" tab is now "CHATS", and when the app is reconnecting, a small spinner at the top of the chat replaces the orange bar.

A camera of its own

Trillian's own camera
Keep it or retake it

Taking a photo for a chat no longer hands you off to your phone's camera app, because Trillian has a camera of its own. It has front and rear lenses, three flash settings, tap to focus, and pinch to zoom, and after each shot a review screen lets you keep it or retake it. The volume keys, the camera key, and the focus key all work as the shutter.

Your profile photo uses the same camera, starting on the front lens. With your phone set to Japan or Korea, the shutter sound follows the local regulations.

Image clusters and a new photo viewer

Swipe through a deck
Imgur links show the picture

Several photos sent together now form an image cluster: a stack of two, a stack of three, or a deck you swipe through. Links to Imgur and Giphy show the picture itself in the chat.

The new photo viewer

Tap a photo to open it in the new full-screen viewer. Pinch to zoom, or double-tap to step through 1x, 2x, and 4x. Swipe through the gallery, where videos play right alongside the photos, and find save, share, and forward in a toolbar that fades out after a few seconds. Videos pick up where you paused them, and tapping a second video while one is playing starts the new one.

Voice clips, rewritten

A live waveform
Drag to jump around

We rewrote both recording and playback. Let go of the button and your clip is done within 200 ms, recorded at 44.1 kHz. The waveform you see while you talk is drawn from the actual audio, and when you play a clip back, you can drag along the waveform to jump around in it. We also fixed a set of voice clip crashes with the new player.

Edit, delete, and react

Edit what you've sent
Delete what you've sent

You can now edit messages you've sent Pro and delete them. Long-press your message and pick Edit or Delete.

Reactions and Markdown
Link previews

React to any message with emoji Pro. Markdown covers headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, code, lists, and blockquotes, and links to YouTube and Instagram show preview cards.

See who's read it

Who read it
Read by everyone

Long-press a message for its details. In a group, the first tab counts who has read it ("Read by 2 of 3") and lists them, and a Reactions tab Pro shows who reacted. Once everyone has read your message, the tab says "Read by everyone" and a triple checkmark shows in the chat.

Drafts stay put
Typing dots

Drafts survive an app restart and show up as "Draft:" in your chats list, and when someone's typing, you'll see bouncing dots in their color.

Video calls Pro

Calls in picture-in-picture
Video calls on Android

Trillian Pro users can now make and receive video calls on Android. On Android 12 and later, your video keeps going out while the call is in picture-in-picture.

A new Sign In screen

A new Sign In screen

Welcome and login are now one Sign In screen, with 13 seasonal welcome scenes picked by the date and your phone's language and region. Single sign-on Enterprise opens right inside the app, two-factor setup Enterprise happens in a panel that slides up, and setting up your PIN Enterprise is part of signing in. Big accounts get a "Hang tight" screen while they load, and the app asks for its permissions on one screen after you sign in, instead of with system prompts at launch.

Notifications

Banners that stack
Notifications with faces

Inside the app, notifications show up as banners that stack, and you swipe them away. System notifications are conversation-style, with the sender's avatar. Urgent messages Enterprise alert you again every 2 minutes for up to 20 minutes while Trillian is open, and on Android 15 and later, system notifications make no sound or vibration while you're using the app.

Smaller changes and fixes

Everything the app keeps on your phone is now in an encrypted database. Uploads keep going when you swipe the app away, and media you send stays on the phone, so reopening a chat doesn't download it again. Taps register right away instead of after a 300 ms wait, and because animations now stop when nothing is moving, the app uses just 13% of the processor while it sits idle.

Trillian Pro Pro on Android is now a Google Play subscription instead of a one-time purchase, and the Trillian Pro row in Settings updates as soon as you buy.

Among the fixes, Pro accounts no longer show as expired by mistake, the chats list says "Yesterday" instead of the day of the week, image bubbles are wider, and the country code picker shows flags.
