Trillian supports optional connectivity with Google Talk, allowing you to pull down your existing Google Talk contacts to send and receive instant messages. You must have an existing Google account to leverage these features!
Connecting to Google Talk
Click the Trillian button in the upper left of your contact list and click Settings:
Click the IM Accounts section, click Add a new account, and click Google Talk:
Type your existing Google email and password and click Connect.
Remember to provide your full email address, e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org, when connecting to Google Talk!
What ports are required to connect to Google Talk?
Google Talk uses TCP/5222 and TCP/443, but can tunnel through only TCP/443 in a restrictive environment.
I'm having trouble connecting to Google Talk even though I believe my password is correct. How can I troubleshoot further?
Make sure you added your Google Talk account using your full email address and not just a username. If you attempted to add the account via username only, delete it and re-add it to try again.
If you have 2-Step Verification set up for your Google account, you will need to generate an application-specific password for Trillian. Once you have generated this, use this password to sign in.
If you do not have 2-Step Verification set up, you will need to enable Access for Less Secure Apps which is located in the Account Permissions area of your Google account settings. Trillian uses encrypted connections to connect you to Google Talk via the XMPP protocol, which at some point Google decided to consider "less secure". Rest assured that your chats and authentication information are always sent over an encrypted connection to Google!
Make sure that you can sign into the Google website with the account you are trying.
Lastly, make sure you are using the most recent version of Trillian for your device.
Does Trillian support the newer Hangouts features?
Trillian connects to the old-school Google Talk, not Hangouts. While you can usually reach your Hangouts contacts this way, certain features are unavailable (like group chats, voice, and video) and in certain business environments you may not be able to see Hangouts users at all depending on their privacy settings.
